Overseas Travel

Sponsor liability does not extend beyond Australia.

Where a 457 visa employee travels overseas for private reasons their Sponsor is not liable for any medical or hospital costs incurred outside Australia.

When traveling on business for their Sponsor they are mostly covered under a corporate travel policy.

However most corporate travel policies are only valid for Permanent Residents. 457 visa employees are not covered by the majority of corporate travel policies.

The same warning applies to credit card cover and both private and business travel policies purchased through travel agents. These are only valid for Permanent Residents and a 457 visa employee will have claims rejected.

Also sponsors sending 457 visa employees overseas on business have a duty of care to ensure that the workers compensation law in their State, allows for cover of Third Country Nationals.
